In New Zealand’s many beachside resort areas that swell up to accomodate four times as many inhabitants during the summers, it is common to have a garden “sleep out” for extra guests: just a room for an extra bed.

Here is an example of that rather unique kind of structure, from Scandinavia.

Prefab greenhouses are available that are modular: they can be constructed to be any size.

Designer Linda Bergroth took a prototype garden greenhouse prefab, added a beautiful floor, a brick pathway and steps leading to the door, painted the wood a chic black, and created a wonderful sleep out bedroom in the garden.

Behind the bed room, but with its doors opening back out towards the garden, is a gardener’s shed for storing gardening tools.

A basic garden solar fixture is sufficient to power the hanging lamp and a lamp on the wall above the bed, as well as the record player.

A simple pine floor completes a simple and delightful garden sleep out/guest bedroom.

It is such a beautiful and serene room that the temptation would be to sleep out every evening.

A Greenhouse Sleep-Out Under glass

Do you think that’s so? I’m a member of the pajamas media now, but even when we had two kids at home and jobs to race to every day, I honestly do not remember any time I felt the need to brush my teeth and wash my face at the same time as my dear hubby. But times have changed…

(…so could this work? A sink for one: a mirror for two?) There are so many many minutes in a day, and it just seems to me that fewer than five of them are spent in front of a bathroom sink. Surely people can take turns?

The mirror for two is an excellent compromise idea, I think. While one of you is brushing teeth, your nearest and dearest can be busy tweezing nose hairs, squeezing pimples or whatever it is he must do, at the adjacent mirror.

Or go whole hog. Have three.  Your biggest kid can primp in there too. Because after all, how much of what you really need to get done in the bathroom requires water, really, anyway?

Does a Double Mirror Make Up for Lack of a Double Sink?

Imagine seeing water splash on this gorgeous fossil as you wash your hands. The spiral of the shell fossil echoes the movement of water.

This is just one example of the artisanal handcrafted concrete sinks shown at Greenfest in San Francisco this year by Keelin Kennedy of Barefoot Design, whose intention in each piece she creates is to manifest her reverence for the lessons that the natural world provides.

Sustainable aspect? Concrete lasts for thousands of years. These sinks will last as long as the concrete aqueducts built in Caesar’s time. Whether the house it is in will too… that’s another story!

Barefoot Design Shows Artisanal Concrete Sinks at Greenfest

The architects envisage them installed at train stations and airports:

“It is not a comfortable situation, because in our modern, aggressive cities there are no opportunities to rest and relax. If you want to sleep, while waiting your plane or train, it may cause many security and hygiene problems. We believe that urban infrastructure should be more comfortable for people. For this purpose we have developed the SLEEPBOX. It provides moments of quiet sleep and rest from the city without wasting time searching for a hotel.”

They envisage the SLEEPBOX as making it possible for anybody to be able to spend the night safely and cheaply in an emergency, like when you are stranded with your baggage unexpectedly and you are afraid that you might doze off in an airport and not be able to protect your belongings.

UK-based bathroom brassware manufacturer Vado blends artisticism, functionality and style in the Sculpture showerhead. Sculpture it may not be, but it is without a doubt a work of modern art and offers a fully customized shower experience. The six shower heads can take any position you can think of, thanks to their flexible hoses. You can mount the modern showerhead to the wall or the ceiling according to your preferences. So bend, twirl and twist, until you reach the desired design. When it gets boring, just make a new one.

Artistic brassware – Sculpture Showerhead by Vado

So here is a welcome brand new take on the loft bedroom. Simply hang a bed space out from the ceiling like a movie wall for hanging art or projecting a movie onto. Or leave it blank. Either way, this looks great.

At night this simple sleeping space has a romantic serenity that succeeds in keeping it separate from the doings of the day. French architects Emmanuel Combarel & Dominique Marrec came up with this clever strategy for a completely open and spacious yet private and encompassing bedroom.

Charming New Take on The Loft Bedroom

There is nothing more relaxing than a hot bathtub after a long exhausting day. Spiritual Mode decided to make this daily ritual even better by creating the futuristic Beignet bathtub. The sci-fi tub pleases the eye with its circular shape and shiny hi-tech details.The two strangely designed metal parts are in fact the taps that fill the tub, while the nozzles on the tub’s base provide a gentle rejuvenating water massage. On the pictures we see also another product by Spiritual Mode – the illuminated shower, that can make your bathroom even more Star Trek-like. We are sure both hi-tech maniacs and luxury addicts will love this modern bathtub.

Beignet: Futuristic Bathtub by Spiritual Mode

This beautiful design helps make greywater-recycling feel like a normal routine, an accepted practice. This is a necessity in a world in which water conservation is a must. The Barcelona-based design firm Roca showed the first ever toilet-sink combo that not only saves water but does it elegantly at the London Design Festival.

This sculptural beauty is a far cry from the incredibly ugly little sinks-in-the-toilet tank that have been seen around the internet till now.

It reduces water usage by 25 percent compared to a standard dual flush toilet. It also incorporates an in-situ water treatment that cleans the sink water to remove bacteria before it goes into the toilet, although that seems a little excessive. But this way it looks clean and not soapy.

The sink appears to be designed to facilitate standing behind the toilet to use the sink. as the sink’s widest side is to the back.  I like the bench in front for dropping iPods onto. We seem to have acquired these almost-body parts like cell phones and iPods that always need to be put somewhere in the bathroom.

Although it’s a novel idea to combine a sink and a toilet; that takes getting used to, conserving water is just one more necessity of living in a water constrained world, and it might as well be done with some grace, as this design firm has succeeded in doing.

This design makes it seem as if we always washed in the toilet tank.

Elegant Greywater Recycling in the Bathroom

Now designers  Jun Yasumoto, Vincent Vandenbrouk, Olivier Pigasse, and Alban Le Henry invite natures  experts into your shower to recycle your water sustainably.

After you have washed in this shower the water passes down into filters and is treated by the reeds and rushes growing around your feet. This cleans the shower water naturally. As Jun Yasumoto puts it:

“These plants have been proven to be able to remove the chemicals from your shampoo. Using a natural filtering principle called phyto-purification, the bathroom becomes a mini-eco-system by recycling and regenerating the waste water. With this project, we tried to combine the pleasure of taking a shower with the satisfaction of recycling water. We wanted the recycling process to actually interact with the use of shower.”

As you see in the diagram after the jump, you would stand on a platform and the reeds would only grow around the sides comprising the “walls” of the shower. You don’t have to share your standing room with the plants!

The waste water would pass into a chamber below the shower floor and go through a maze of filters. The system includes sand, reeds, rushes, a mesh filter, water hyacinths and lemnas, and finally a carbon filter.

They actually conceived of their idea seven years ago. It was only after posting the concept on the internet recently that they realized that the level of interest warranted another look at their concept. They have been inundated with  queries about where their shower can be bought.

“No prototype has been made as the project is just a concept for the moment, but it is interesting to see the positive feedback we are getting since we put these images online,” Yasumoto said “It has made us think we should keep on developing this idea and start thinking of ways to integrate it and bring it closer to reality.”

Perhaps it is time for a patent and commercialization of the idea. Kudos go to these graduates from the French national design school Ecole Nationale Supirieure de Creation Industrielle.
