Having just moved to a tiny cabin overlooking the sea, and surrounded by native forest, I can attest from personal experience that there really is something very, very relaxing, indeed almost soporific, about living high up amongst trees. Trees really know how to seem to be doing nothing.

Even though trees are actually ferociously manufacturing wood, (and more and more and more of it) they make you feel like really they are doing nothing but existing, and in turn it makes you feel like doing nothing but existing too.

Here is a wonderful place to sleep soundly… suspended high among the treetops, shielded from weather by the wood that has been manufactured outside by the surrounding forest.

Maybe a little reading can be done before falling…. zzzz….zzzz….

The library downstairs affords plenty of books to indulge in long days of reading…

Another treehouse by the same company offers respite for four, providing for food and rest in one tiny space.

You can see just how very tiny the space is, with this view, from the beds, out the door.

The exterior of this one has a little more “forest gnome” look than the book reader’s tree house. Both are from Treehouse Point, which specializes in supplying unusual accommodations for travelers who “seek comfort and style in friendly and natural surroundings.” The tree houses all feature handmade beds, vintage furnishings and original art.

Treehouses… Soporific Bliss

There is nothing more of an ugly in-the-way nuisance than a stack of chairs, waiting to be separated and used. You practically have to hide them away at all other times, and who has the space to spare for that? Wouldn’t it be a great idea to design stackable chairs so that you could store things on them when they are not in use as chairs?

Well now, from Spanish design studio Mr. Simon, here is a very ingenious chair stacking design that is actually engineered to support the storage that is needed when they are not functioning as chairs, so that they can become a useful side table when they are not chairs:

What is more, this “table” is actually ok-looking in its own right – it in no way hints that it is a really just some sorry stack of chairs just waiting for occasional guests.

Up close, the interesting wood treatment declares the surface as a table. The Cóm-oda chair, launched during the Valencia Disseny Week 2011 last week was featured at Freshome.

Luxury Hidout for the Safari Set

The Opera camper was originally conceived 4 years ago. The first prototype was a far cry from this superbly elegant camper, but it held the basic idea.

A camper that could be towed behind a car in a folded-down position so that all the heavy weight of a trailer is greatly reduced. Only the built-in waist-high appliances, things like the elegant fridge to stock your pricey champagne are supported.

The rest all opens out as a cotton canvass tent.

Incorporating fixtures not usually seen in camping homes away from home…

…Dutch design firm YSIN evolved the traditional camper into a luxury good, as far from campers now as a luxury yacht is from a dinghy.

YSIN worked with Enthoven Associates Design Consultancy in Antwerp on the production model.

They helped evolve the way the tent opens up.

The finished shape suggests the shape of the Sydney Opera House, and hence, the name, the Opera Camper. A camper for those who don’t like ants in their sandwiches…
