I read a lot of negative comments on this product and its marketting. Some question its aesthetic advantage, some argue that the pictures the company release are fake etc.

However, I evaluate it as a step forward that expand the market for consumer preferences and a positive reflection of alternative demands. (http://ecofuture.net/aliceinwonderland/2009/08/09/photovoltaic-tiles/)

Since I wrote this, I discovered that the way this works is that only some of these tiles are solar; the matching clay tiles are just normal tiles.

The simple clay tiles are much cheaper obviously, so you do not need to waste solar tiles on North faces or clipped along the peaks.

The solar tiles come in 10 feet x 10 feet square sections, but they blend so well into the rest, you don't see the difference.

The California Solar rebate (the PG&E rebate) pays very well for these, which means that they produce power at an independently rated rate comparable with other building integrated PV like Uni Solar thinfilm. You need more space when you use BIPV, but the efficiency, while lower to start with, doesn't degrade over the years as fast as old fashioned PV.
