An Intriguing Shabby Chic Stay in Uruguay
Five-meter high factory gates and a facade of corrugated metal give an industrial-chic flair to the entrance to Casa Zinc, but inside the tall gates, it’s a different story.
Here the old facade is clad in vintage railway bricks, and has the charm of tall french doors that belie its original use.
Now the old factory building is a six bedroom hotel restored with casual flair by antique dealer Aaron Hojman as a “posada bohemia.”
Every detail is perfectly imperfect for a refined stay at the shabby-chic posada.
There is an attentive quality to the cheerfully understated restoration.
White-slathered floorboards barely bother to meet, while a table leg has aged out of its original paint.
An eclectic mix of furniture styles is loosely organized by the black and white tile floor. Read the rest of this entry »
A Lap Pool for Floating Above it All in Canada
To be able to float through a space is surely a new way to experience architectural space.
This overhead pool offers the next best thing; water is suspended above the entrance to a home.
The dappled light cast by the water plays across the walls for a skylit entrance with a difference from Patkau Architects.
From the rooftop terrace, the utmost in serene views leads the spirit out across the north shore of the bay.
The Shaw house is located across English Bay from downtown Vancouver.
A skylight window below its incredible lap pool brings light deep into the central space.
The almost magical light is transmitted through a glass bottom to the pool. Read the rest of this entry »
Design Dilemma: Small Apartment, Good Design
Good things can come in small packages. In fact, sometimes, it’s the smallness of things that makes a place especially spectacular. Here’s one example of a practical, beautiful small apartment which outshines much larger digs simply with its elegant simplicity.
This apartment, designed by Alan Chu, belongs to a young businessman who is using it only temporarily. That means the owner did not need lots of furniture or storage. Instead, he required just a well-thought out kitchen, entertaining space, and of course, sleeping quarters. Each of those needs is stylishly accounted for.
The kitchen combines with the living room to create an open space appropriate for both cooking and entertaining: And since the refrigerator has such a prominent role in this apartment, it is allowed to become a design feature. The bright red is picked up in a patchwork overdyed persian carpet.
Storage around the entertainment center combines with storage in the kitchen for one seamless wall that feels integrated. Storage around the cool Smeg refrigerator is especially handy and the red interior of cabinets ties in brilliantly with the red theme.
You’ll notice the living room is comprised only of a light metal chair and a large comfortable couch which can stand in as a bed for guests when necessary.
Here you get a better sense of just how luxurious the couch is:
The metal spiral staircase leads to a second floor which includes another sleeping space and bathroom quarters. Although the space is relatively austere, it doesn’t feel that way, simply because of the use of bright pops of color in the rug, refrigerator, interior cabinet color and accessories. It just goes to show how little color is needed to cozy up a neutral interior. What a jewel of an apartment!
