Like a Bleached Fossil, an Intriguing Hotel in Far Off Patagonia
In distant Patagonia, a unique and strange hotel and spa has an otherworldly feeling.
The natural-looking roof construction of its amazing structure is organic, looking like a nest, or a some kind of giant spiders web.
Hugging the ground, the hotel and spa barely registers on the landscape.
Its boomerang shape seems to echo the curve of the sky.
Despite the low slung exterior, the panorama is experienced fully from within.
Enormous vistas are fully realized through the high windows.
The architect drew his inspiration from the idea of an old fossil, a prehistoric animal beached on the lakeshore, like those drawn by Charles Darwin.
The attention to detail is thanks to interior designers Alexandra Edwards and Carolina Del Piano.
Hand rails are formed of bleached driftwood scoured by the snows and winds across these desolate plains.
Natural materials, wood, leather, wool, cotton create a sense of unparalleled quiet and comfort. Read the rest of this entry »
Mysterious But Chic: A Little Black Townhouse in Mexico City
A two story black stucco house occupies half its lot, lengthwise.
The other half is a side courtyard.
Designed by DCPP Arquitectos, the very chic urban design, with its all black exterior bounced off an oiled wood doorway, suddenly gives way to a glass fronted panel revealing its white innards upstairs.
The high wall surrounding the courtyard makes for a strangely minimal “black site.”
The unassuming townhouse is appropriate for its very urban setting in Mexico City.
Its long side courtyard is divided by a wooden screen, like a stage setting in an off-Broadway play.
Hotel Seven4One – a Colorful Paradise of Textural Delight
The public spaces of a small boutique hotel in Laguna Beach have been enticingly renovated by Horst Architects.
A delicious combination of textures balance each other. The weathered wood contrasts with the rusty steel. Hot consuming fire contrasts with cool growing greenery.
A shelf along the far wall supports a fire in a sort of tray that holds white slab cushioned seating.
Because the slab of white limestone hearth is similar to the white seating cushions, the fireplace blends into the seating.
Bright primary colors of scarlet, turquoise and white are perfectly played against the rusty Corten steel and the weathered wood.
Atop the greenery, yet another intriguing contrasting material. Read the rest of this entry »
