A Glorious Contemporary Greek House
This clear and simple design has a big architecture feature I found lovely:
This glass-sided entrance ramp pierces the house itself, where it continues right along into the interior by becoming the glass-side to the mezzanine and the stair down to the living room.
The architecture is by Greek firm Nikos Koukourakis.
The living room looks out over a glorious pool bounded by the simplest of boundary walls, seemingly extending the edge of the living space. Read the rest of this entry »
A Sophisticated Tropical Oasis at Mermaid Beach
A very glamourous coastal home at Mermaid Beach in Queensland, Australia is designed by BGD Architects.
It makes its own oasis, with a rich heavy timber colonnade ‘gift wrapping’ the outdoor area.
This colonnade makes a grand entry, that is both open and enclosed, with a focal point at the end.
A tantalising glimpse of the ocean is like a tiny precious jewel in a box.
As you get to the end of the colonnade, suddenly you are in the great room, which directly captures the full beachfront on the other side.
This huge great room is designed to accommodate a growing family, multiple guests and frequent entertaining.
In the front, its full length opens directly on to the wide white sand beach – from the marble and timber kitchen with chef’s scullery and abundant cold and dry storage – to the farthest end.
To accommodate the inevitable sandy feet that accumulate in this setting, the flooring is durable and ‘swipe clean’ hardwood.
Throughout, the palette of finishes of natural timbers and stone used are both durable and sophisticated. Read the rest of this entry »

The site is Perth’s northern beach suburbs, with the salt, wind and sun that can be harsh on houses that are often found near beaches.
The first priority in creating the new outdoor room was to provide shelter from the morning sun and privacy from elevated neighbours at the rear.
So a tall perimeter wall better defined the space, making a more private and intimate setting.
A louvred roof offered the flexibility to control light entering the main dining area as well as winter sun into the new theatre room. Read the rest of this entry »
