Setting aside an entire island exclusively for houses that were designed by the only best architectural firms is a completely novel idea, and a welcome change from business-as-usual.

Although we focus on architecture here at this site, in the real world; professionally designed homes are actually a rarity, set amongst all the banal and ugly monstrosities that commercial builders churn out. Perhaps only one in a hundred is designed by a professional.

To remedy this state of affairs, Athens developer Oliaros invited the top ten sustainable architectural firms to join together in creating a settlement of 24 inspired and sustainable houses on the Greek Island of Antiparos.

Lucky invitees? decaArchitecture, Katerina Tsigarida Arch, Andreas Angelidakis; AA Architecture Studio, Nicos Valsamakis, VOIS, Atelier Bow Wow, Harry Gugger Studio, AFGH Architects, Camilo Rebelo – Suzana Martins and Tala Mikdashi / tm studio.

We’ve covered one of these unique houses already in Earth Sheltered Housing for Our Future Climates. Deca Architecture’s award-winning Aloni House with its extremely future-forward architecture, is typical of these inspiring and thoughtful dwellings, that build on a traditional regional architectural vernacular of distinctive Cycladic architecture that goes back 5,000 years.
